After wo days of planning, a four hour drive from Stockholm and a serious lack of caffeine the only question I wanted to ask at the Rework press conference was why Rework? All the words that seemed to bounce of the promotional papers screamed “youth”, “action”, “solutions” and yet just about everything that appeared on the Rework program seemed to be based much more in the head then in the hands. As an impatient youth representative I have to ask why are we bringing together 2000 talented individuals and not making physical changes in the local area as well as changes to global targets and policies. How come when I arrived with my vibrant van of youth representatives I could hardly even identify the venue where the conference was being held. There was no people making music, no gurilla gardening or painting murals out the front. No open debates for the public in the foyer. All the radical energy of youth which I had hoped would drive the discussions remained in Stockholm with yesterdays coffee. My hope for Rework is that the concept of work is embodied not only by the conference cleaners but by every individual, so that we can begin to transform Leksand in the same way we hope to Rework the world.
